frequently asked questions

Air Squares is a 9 square yard game inspired by the popular 4 square game. We’ve loved 4 square since elementary school days and the elevated nine square game at camps in recent years. Those memories inspired us to create Air Squares so playground fun could be portable, affordable, and enjoyable.

The best thing about Air Squares is you can take it wherever – to the beach, the backyard, the park, the parking lot, or inside a gym or play area.

1. What is the game 9 square?

Playing a 9 square game is like playing 4 square on the ground, but in the air instead. With Air Squares, you have the option to set up a 4 square net or a 9 square net depending on your number of players. Similar to 4 square on the ground, the goal is to hit the ball out of your square and into another square.

2. How do you play 9 square?

The goal of a 9 square game like Air Squares is to keep the ball out of your square. If the ball lands in your square, you must hit it up and out of your square and into someone else’s. To begin, pick one square to be the king or queen square. If you’re playing with 9 squares, this is the middle square. The player in the king or queen square serves the ball. When a player does not return a ball, he or she is out and everyone else moves closer to the middle square, rotating counterclockwise. The player who was out goes back to square one. You can tap the ball up to three times to get it out of your square to stay alive (but not to gain an advantage!) and you can only spike on the first hit. If you touch the rope, you’re out. You want to stay in the king or queen square as long as possible. Click here for a list of official rules.

3. Who can play 9 square?

Everyone! Air Squares is a game for all ages. If you have smaller Air Squares players, you can buy the adjustable height set.

4. How do you set up Air Squares?

If you’re playing with 4 squares, plan on setting up on a 25’ x 25’ flat area. The 9 Air Squares requires a 30’ x 30’ flat area. You start with the top net, then assemble the poles, followed by the anchors and the guy ropes. Once everything is ready, up it goes! You can read detailed instructions for the standard option and detailed instructions for the adjustable option. We also have a video you can watch here.

5. How long does it take to set up Air Squares?

If you have four friends, Air Squares only takes five minutes to set up. On your own, plan on about 14 minutes.

6. What size ball do you use for 9 square?

You can play a 9 square game with most any lightweight ball from a beachball for little players to a volleyball, or you can buy the official one.

7. How tall is Air Squares?

The standard Air Squares set is 7’11” tall (the height of a regulation volleyball net) when it is set up and ready to play.

8. Can you adjust the height for Air Squares?

If your Air Squares players are middle school age or older, the standard option is the best one for you. Each set includes anchors and two net options (4 squares or 9 squares).

9. Can I play Air Squares indoors?

You can play Air Squares indoors or outdoors! The set comes with floor friendly sandbags and stakes so you can set up anywhere.

10. How big the Air Squares carry bag?

The bag for Air Squares weighs 12 pounds and is 36 inches long, 6 inches tall, and 6 inches wide, so about the size of a chair you carry to the park. The entire Air Squares game fits in one bag, has a carry strap to fit over your shoulder, and easily stores underneath a seat in your car. We even include a drawstring backpack to carry your ball.
